If luxury car shopping is on your agenda for this year, you're in for a treat when you head to your local Audi dealership. As Audi sales soar across the globe, the question is no longer whether you should buy an Audi but rather which one to choose.

The 2024 Audi A5 and A6 blend enough style, substance, and sublime performance to delight even the most fastidious premium vehicle enthusiast.

Read on for a rundown of the Audi A5 vs A6 to help you decide between the two.

About the Audi A5 and A6 Luxury Vehicles

The Audi A5 is a good-looking vehicle with sleek, no-nonsense lines, two available trims (the 40 TFSI® and 45 TFSI®), and three design variants. The four-seater Audi A5 Coupe features a sporty two-door design, and the cabriolet adds a sunroof to this option.

The fastback-inspired Audi A5 Sportback variety adds a hint of SUV practicality, plenty of designer style, and two extra doors.

The 2024 Audi A6 offers two powertrain options, namely the 45 TFSI® and 55 TFSI®. Both versions of the car seat five people comfortably and feature subdued exterior styling and refined interiors. The design of the Audi A6 places comfort and practicality above all else, making it the perfect choice for long trips.

Both the Audi A5 and A6 are available with three feature packages, i.e., Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige, each offering increasing levels of luxury and enhanced features.

An entry-level Audi A5 costs around $47,295, with the top-of-the-range A5 S Line Prestige retailing for around $69,005. A base model Audi A6 will set you back $63,200, and the Prestige 55 costs around $72,795.

Audi A5 and A6 Performance and Reliability

Audi vehicle drivers demand the best from their vehicles, and the A5 and A6 won't disappoint you. The Audi A5 boasts a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a mild hybrid system.

This enables the 40 TFSI® to produce 201 HP and 236 lb. ft. of torque, while the 45 TFSI® outputs 261 HP and 273 lb. ft. of torque. The Audi A5 40 TFSI® can reach 60 mph from a standstill in 6.4 seconds, while the more powerful 50 TFSI® makes the trip in 5.4 seconds.

The Audi A6 has the same engine as the A5, as well as a 3 L V6 variety with hybrid technology and a 12- or 48-volt alternator to ensure it starts and runs without a hitch. The V6 engine takes the A6 from zero to 60 mph in a blazing 4.8 seconds.

Both the A5 and A6 have a seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch automatic transmission and quattro® AWD with ultra® technology.

According to J.D. Power, the Audi A6 has a reliability rating of 82/100, but reviewers haven't given their opinions on the Audi A5 yet.

Fuel Consumption for the A5 and A6 Audi Models

Thanks to their hybrid technologies, the A5 and A6 get 26 mpg for city driving and 32 mpg on the highway, while the more powerful engine averages 23 mpg in town and 29 mpg on the open road.

In 2025, Audi has indicated that it will release an all-electric Audi A6 e-tron powered by two electric motors with DC fast-charging capability. This technology tops up the battery from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes.

These vehicles should achieve 400 miles on a single charge. MPGe predictions have yet to be released for this model.

Audi A5 vs A6: Safety Features

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards the Audi A6 and A5 an overall safety rating of 'Good'. That's thanks to a host of cutting-edge safety features included in both vehicles.

These include the innovative Audi PreSense® city and PreSense® rear features. This technology uses safety sensors to activate emergency braking at up to 52 mph and monitor your surroundings for collisions from behind.

Audi Park Assist automatically steers your vehicle into a parking spot at idle speed, and Active Lane Assist provides feedback to help you stay in your lane while driving.

Adaptive Cruise Control practically drives the car for you by maintaining distance and speed automatically while regulating braking and acceleration.

High Beam Assist dips the headlights when it senses oncoming driving during nighttime driving. A top-view camera system and head-up display complete the safety features of the Audi A5.

Other standard safety features include

  • 4-wheel ABS disc brakes

  • Dual front and side impact airbags
  • A knee airbag and an overhead airbag

Comparing the A5 and A6 Interiors

Driving an Audi is a luxury experience complemented by the plush leather and wood-finished interiors of the Audi A5 and A6. Both feature heated and ventilated front seats, with the A6 adding massage functionality in the front seats plus the option to add heated rear seats.

The A5 features 50/50 split rear seat folding functionality to make space for cargo, and the A6 has a 40/20/40 seat folding setup.

Three-zone climate control in the A5 and four-zone climate control in the A6 add comfort to the cabin interiors.
