Be sure the spare tire is in the car, that it has air, and all the tools needed to change a flat tire are safely inside the trunk. Keep some flashlights and batteries inside the trunk. These are essential if you break down in the dark and need to make repairs or have to flag down other drivers to help. Bring a set of jumper cables so you can get help from a driver to get your vehicle running. A box of assorted tools could go a long way in making some small repairs to keep you moving on the road.
