Audi has a long history of innovations when it comes to headlamps. In 2004, for example, they were the first automaker to use LED daytime running lamp technology, while models like the R8 received all-LED headlamps in 2008. However, the latest technologies—Matrix LED and laser-based headlamps—have been barred from the U.S.. Until now.
At this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, Audi will be bringing along a 2017 R8 with a very special bit of tech: laser headlamps! The design consists of one laser module consisting of four high intensity laser diodes bundled into a blue laser beams. Recognizable by their blue signature light, which is visible from 40 mph on up, provides greater visibility without “dazzling” other oncoming cars. Hopefully, other models in the brand’s portfolio will follow suit!
