25 years ago, racing legend Walter Rohrl and his Audi Sport Quattro S1 scaled the world-famous Pikes Peak in record-setting time, reaching the summit in ten minutes and forty-eight seconds. The record has stood to this day, technically. Since Rohrl's record run, the track has been paved, meaning others have climbed the hill in less time, but the Audi Sport Quattro S1 still holds the best mark in the pre-paved era, which we at Audi of Charlotte think is more impressive.
In honor of its 25th Anniversary, Audi plans to celebrate by reliving some history as both Röhrl and the original 1987 Quattro S1 will climb the course in an exhibition drive.
Though it won't be part of the official 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, it's still a pretty exciting prospect, leaving us with so many questions. How will the original Audi Sport Quattro S1 perform all these years later? Will the paved track make a difference now? How about Rohrl? Will he even miss a beat as he returns to the rally scene? Really, we cannot wait to see what happens, and we hope those in the greater Charlotte area are just as excited.
