Learn How to Test Your Car's Battery

Extremes in temperature can play havoc with a car battery that's only beginning to show signs of age. If your battery is four or five years old, you may want to start checking it regularly for indications that it's time to get a new one.

An inexpensive voltmeter will tell you how much charge your battery can hold. Always wear eye and hand protection when working with a car battery. Turn off your car and double check that all its lights are off as well. Connect the red lead on your voltmeter to the positive terminal on your battery, then connect the black lead to the negative. Your voltage should read between +12.4-+12.6. If your battery is beginning to fail, its reading will be below +12.2.
